BULC invites you to our first working bee of 2018. We will again share the joy of making our community a more beautiful place and restoring one of our urban creeks to a vibrant natural ecosystem this Sunday.
We invite you to join us on Sunday 4th February for a planting day to help expand a patch of lowland rainforest adjoining Cemetary Creek and the practice cricket nets at Connell Park. We’ll have lots of plants to plant, so the more the merrier!
Participants will learn about local rainforest plants, local weeds and how to control them from the experts whilst having some fun and enjoying a delicisous morning tea.
For more information contact Jane on 0411 512 801.
The newly planted area will augment over 20 years of work by Bellingen Urban Landcare on the site. The vegetation surrounding Cemetery Creek in this area was originally taken over as a Bellingen Urban Landcare Inc. (BULC) site in 1996.
Chairperson with BULC Tim Scanlon said “100 years ago people swam in Cemetery Creek but over the years it became very degraded, clogged with rubbish and infested with camphor laurels and privets.”
“Since 1996 the Creek has been dramatically improved through rubbish removal, weed control and planting of lowland rainforest species and it now supports a great range of wildlife from ducks, water dragons and eels to square tailed kites, wompoo fruit-doves and powerful owl.”
